The Minority and Justice Commission and Equity in Education Coalition are excited to announce the launch of a free, five-part, professional growth series entitled, Eliminating the Pipeline: Transforming Juvenile Justice and School Discipline. The series will take a new approach to eliminating the “school-to-prison pipeline” by bringing together educators and courts to transform the current school discipline climate and involvement with the juvenile justice system through a racial equity lens. Each workshop in the series will build on each other. If possible, please plan to attend all of the workshops.

When children are referred to courts for school behavior, it can result in criminalization; creating a criminal record, criminal debt, or detention in some instances. The Commission recognizes that a disproportionate number of court-involved youth are children of color, children from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and children with disabilities. We seek to address and highlight the important role that courts can play in redirecting and reconnecting court-involved youth to education and social supports in their communities.

We invite you to join us for our first workshop: Understanding Why Racial Equity In Education Is Important. The workshop will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Tukwila Community Center. Register today. Space is limited. More information attached.
